Roaster’s Choice Espresso Coffee

This Roaster's Choice Espresso takes us to Honduras, the largest coffee producer in Central America. As with Brazil, coffee beans in Honduras has traditionally been grown for the commodity market and has therefore not been known for its quality. With the introduction of quality Honduras coffee competitors such as the Cup of Excellence we have begun to see exceptional speciality coffees coming out of Honduras.

Roaster's Choice Espresso comes from Finca Cual Bicicleta: meaning “Which bicycle.” It reflects grower Oscar Omar’s outlook on life. When riding a bicycle, you must keep balance and all individual parts of the chain need to work together perfectly in order to keep moving. It is this attitude to life that has influenced how Oscar runs his coffee farm.

In 1997 Oscar was producing coffee conventionally, but from the start of 2003, he decided to convert his entire coffee farm to organic production. At first, his yield declined dramatically due to susceptibility to plant diseases. However, Oscar persisted and now coffee production is at an all-time high while the farm is operating sustainably. Coffee quality has also improved with Oscar’s Geisha lot taking 1st place at this year’s regional speciality coffee competition.

And it’s not just the coffee that keeps Oscar busy; when harvest is over, the farm becomes a community school where Oscar teaches organic farming to local kids. So the production of speciality coffee at Finca Cual Bicicleta is having a real positive impact on the local community.

This coffee is a fantastic example of how dedicated farming can produce excellent results. With complex, fruity acidity and delicious sweetness, it makes for an excellent espresso. Enjoy!
