So what exactly do I get in the Cafédirect Handpicked delivery box each month?

Each month you will get a slim line box containing a 250g bag (20-25 cups) of gourmet coffee chosen by our experts that month from around the world, a gorgeous booklet explaining the provenance of the coffee and our tasting notes. We often put a special treat in too which is only available on our classic plans.

Should I order Whole Beans or Pre-Ground?

If you have your own bean grinder then Whole Beans is a perfect choice, and especially so if you like to make your own espresso. The best possible taste and aroma come from grinding whole coffee beans just before making your coffee. For some obsessives, it’s all part of the ritual and doesn’t take as long as you might think. If you're not sure, Pre-Ground is always the safer option to start with and you can change between the two at any time through your personal account pages.

Should I order the espresso or filter plan?

If you mainly brew your coffee with an espresso machine or stove/moka pot, or add lots of milk, then the espresso plan is for you. If you generally brew in a cafetiere, aeropress, pour-over then you’d be better off with the filter plan. You can easily switch between the two at any time on your account page; change before midnight on the 10th to impact your delivery on the 14th.

What’s the difference between the espresso and filter coffees?

Our Filter coffees are 100% speciality grade coffees from different places each month, they are roasted light – medium to bring out all the nuances of the flavour of the coffees. These coffees are best brewed in cafetiere, aeropresses or pour overs like Hario’s V60. They are best drunk black or with a dash of milk to taste. If you order your coffee ground it will be a medium grind to suit all filter methods

Our Espresso coffees are also the very best speciality grade coffees from different places each month. But to give the coffee the extra body and kick you expect from an espresso we blend each months coffee with our specially developed Espresso base to taste. We also roast slightly darker than our filter coffees to ensure we deliver the intensity of flavour needed to give you a true espresso experience, and to cut through the milk if you are making lattes, cappuccinos or flat whites. If you order this coffee ground it will ground fine to suit espresso brewing methods

How do you choose the coffee each month?

Every month our experts curate from over 50 possibilities to find the most outstanding gourmet coffee they can to send to our members each month. You can read more about how this works in our section about sourcing the coffee.

How is this different to buying a bag at the supermarket?

In quite a few ways, most notably the quality of the coffee and where it's sourced from. Cafédirect Handpicked selects coffee which is equivalent to a Gran Reserva in Spanish wine - only the very best beans and farms makes it into a Handpicked box. We freshly roast the beans and deliver them within 7 days of roasting which is never possible from a supermarket; in fact most of their coffees take weeks to even arrive on the shelves and it's a common fact that fresh pre-ground coffee is best drunk within 4 weeks of roasting. You'll also get the thrill of discovering something new each month and looking forward to that special treat to arrive through your letterbox.

Are all your coffees Fairtrade?

As part of Cafédirect, Handpicked upholds the same values and principles in terms of its commitment to farmers and communities. We do try to source all coffees Fairtrade, though at the speciality level and in all regions across the world, this is not always possible. If a coffee is not Fairtrade certified it will still be sourced according to Fairtrade principles, last year Handpicked paid over twice as much for our coffees as the Fairtrade minimum price.

In addition to this we return at least 1/3rd of our profits back to growers through the Cafedirect Producers Foundation, to invest in a more sustainable and tastier future.

How should I store my Handpicked coffee at home?

Fresh coffee should be kept in a cool dry place. It needs protecting against light, heat, air and moisture to keep it at its best. Contrary to what you might have heard we would never keep coffee in the fridge, or the even the freezer. An air-tight ceramic jar on a cool shelf works very well (that’s temperature cool, it doesn’t need to be on a designer shelf!)

When do the Handpicked boxes arrive?

They're always delivered around the 14th of each month, give or take a few days to cater for holiday periods and we send out an email letting you know when they're on their way.

Will it fit through my letterbox?

The Discovery plan comes in a "small packet" size at 30mm height, which fits through 95% of all letterboxes. The 5% - you know who you are...

Can I buy the Discovery plan as a gift?

Yes, we offer specific gift plans which you can check out on our Discovery Gift Plans.

When do I get billed?

If it’s your first purchase from us, we’ll charge your card immediately, once you confirm your subscription. For recurring payments, the cards get charged on the 2nd of each month.

Can I cancel my subscription at any time?

If you opt for the rolling monthly plan then you can cancel by emailing us before the 2nd of the month. If you cancel between the 2nd and the 14th, then you'll still get that month's box as that is during our billing and delivery cycle. For 6 and 12 month subscriptions, it's not possible to cancel but you can transfer it to anyone you choose free of charge at any time.

If you have a problem with a product or service you bought online on Cafédirect Handpicked, you can submit your complaint via the Online Dispute Resolution Platform of the European Commission via the following address which may allow out-of-court dispute settlement.

Is it possible to refer my friends and earn points or credits?

Absolutely and it's one of your most popular features. Once you're a paying subscriber, you will get a unique referral code and link which you can share with your friends. When they sign up, they'll get their first month for free and you'll get your next month at half price (and it's cumulative too so the more people you refer, the more half price months you earn)

What if I want more coffee each month than 250g?

We can arrange something for you, whether you're a heavy home user or a business - so please get in touch at and we can sort out a multi-pack proposition for you.

Do you post outside the UK?

Yes, that is certainly possible. Drops us an email at and let us know where you'd like it delivered to so we can confirm prices and availability.

Handpicked Gourmet Coffee Gift Experience

A Handpicked gift subscription is a perfect unusual luxury treat for someone special, whether it's a birthday or a big event like Christmas. As such, we take extra special care to ensure they get an amazing experience from us each and every time.

So what exactly will they get in their Handpicked box each month?

Each month they will receive a slimline box which contains a different 250g bag (20-25 cups) of gourmet coffee chosen by our experts from around the world, a gorgeous booklet explaining the provenance of the coffee and tasting notes, and sometimes a special extra treat that we put in from time to time.

When will the recipient get their gift and how do they redeem it?

At the end of your purchase you will receive a unique gift code that you can pass on to the recipient. They can then use this code to redeem their Handpicked coffee at any time (within the expiry date) - giving them the freedom to set up their preferred delivery terms.

Our Handpicked boxes arrive around the 14th of the month and our cut-off date is the 10th, so any orders after that date will arrive on the 14th of the following month.

You won't send them any billing information, emails, or order confirmations will you?

No way! You will get all payment receipts, claim codes, and confirmations. The only way the gift recipient will know about the gift is if you tell them yourself.

Can I send gifts to international addresses?

Yes, it’s possible. Please write to us at letting us know the delivery address and we can provide a quote for the extra postage and process from there.

Do you automatically renew the gift subscription at the end of the term?

No we don’t - in fact the gift shouldn't really be called a subscription as it's more a one off purchase. Towards the end of the term we will email the gift recipient to ask if they would like to continue. If not we simply close the account.

How long do they have to claim their gift?

3 months. At the end of which the code will expire and be non-refundable. It will be up to you as the purchaser to remind them.

I’m having problems redeeming my gift code. Any ideas?

9 times out of 10 this is resolved by ensuring you are using capital letters, and that ‘I’s, ‘L’s, ‘1’s and ‘0’s ‘O’s aren’t mixed up. If this still doesn’t work contact us at and we’ll get it sorted for you.
