Guatemala Huehuetenango

In December we created a special blend for the festive season, combining two coffees  from the Huehuetenango region in Guatemala. Coffee is Guatemala’s number one export and a significant contributor to the country’s economy. Growing many different and distinctive coffees, Guatemala has a rich history and a strong reputation for producing high quality beans. The country has many coffee regions, of which Huehuetenango really stands out. The hot, dry winds that blow from Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain protect Huehuetenango from the frost, allowing for cultivation at extreme altitudes. The remoteness of the region means that producers need to process the coffee themselves, rather than take it to a centralised coffee washing station. This means that every farmer is an expert in processing coffee as well as growing it. The two farms featured in our blend are geographical neighbours yet produce very different flavour profiles. Finca Guipoj offers black cherry, redcurrants and a dark chocolate finish while Finca Las Orquideas has lighter notes of butterscotch and crisp apple. By blending these coffees we have created a fuller picture of the complexities Guatemala has to offer with the depth of Guipoj balanced by the softer, sweeter Las Orquideas.
Merry Christmas from everyone at Handpicked!
